Dios mio. All that hard (impossible for 99% of the human population) work. Always deserving a raise, or bonus, which seldom comes. Alas, freedom you've found, but even though the grind was difficult at the time, I'm positive you miss much of the experience. You could do 10 Substacks, Michael, I'm sure, on what you miss about that difficult work. Not only the work but the comradery and connecting with other survivors. Not to mention, some of the food. Your back will forgive you. :)
Oh yeah … I miss a lot of it, just as you say. The forthcoming book (I’m now correcting the third proof from the publisher) will deal with a lot of what I miss.
I wish I was still physically capable of doing that kind of work, but alas, that horse has long since fled the barn. This post was orginally written when I was doing that job, thus the somewhat put-upon attitude … but I consider these old posts to be Time Capsules of a sort. I re-write them for clarity and to smooth out the rough bits, but try not to alter their tone, because they’re a record of where my head was at back then.

Which makes them great. I'll look forward to purchasing you book when it's ready. Have a great weekend. Strange as it's already been.
“Smart”, nothing. Blind luck. I coulda been a PA!
Well … I WAS a PA for a while — which explains my joy at finally leaving that world for the heavy-lifting joys of grip/electric.
Brutal. That's the best word I can come up with. I may have worked that hard. Once. And for a few hours, NOT days. My sympathies.
Ain't retirement grand?
Indeed it is.
Well, the smart people went into camera and sound … the rest of us ended up in the trenches. Live and learn.
"Lifting heavy things for geniuses", says Monty.
Once again, Monty nails it!
